BRANDENBURG BERLIN AIRPORT (BER) INFORMATION

The new Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) opened on the 31st of October 2020. As a result, this will mean changes for both of the current airports in Berlin, Berlin Tegel Airport (TXL) and Berlin Schönefeld Airport (SXF). Essentially Tegel Aiport will close, whilst Schönefeld Airport will continue to exist as part of the new Brandenburg airport in the form of Terminal 5, and changing it's IATA code from SXF to BER as of the 25th October 2020.

As the winter season starts, Berlin Schönefeld Airport will begin life as Terminal 5 of Berlin Brandenburg's BER air traffic arrangement. Winter season starts on 25th October 2020.

Airlines present at Berlin Brandenburg Airport include Aegean Airlines, Aeroflot, Air Canada Rouge, Air France, Air Malta, Air Serbia, Alitalia, American Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Delta Airlines, easyJet, El Al, KLM and Qatar Airways as well as SAS and Ukraine International Airlines. Several more airlines have already been confirmed for Terminal 1 operations from 2020 onwards.

The airport is also known as Berlin Brandenburg Willy Brandt Airport in honour of Germany's former Chancellor Willy Brandt, who was instrumental in bringing about reunification, together with his successor, Helmut Kohl.

T5 has check-in desks and baggage acceptance in areas K, L and M Departure, where a large number of self-service kiosks are located. Gates are also located in K, L and M. Boarding at Terminal 1 is on Level 0, E1 and E2. At Terminal 2 boarding will be on Level 0, where 16 check-in desks handle passengers' travel and there's also one central baggage acceptance desk.

Terminal 1 and 2 are located next to each other - from Terminal 1 it's not far to walk to T2. Terminal 5 is too far away. Express buses and an underground train system, the S-Bahn, operate between all three terminals, so it's easy to get from terminal to terminal, and also to Berlin Central Train Station (Berlin Hauptbahnhof).

Express buses X7, X71 and N7 as well as S-Bahn S9 and S45 connect the terminals already. Eventually, regional trains will travel from the airport's train station, which is located below Terminal 1, on Level U2. There are airport express buses and S-Bahn trains four times an hour; getting to Berlin Hauptbahnhof takes 30 minutes, travelling between terminals takes just 8 minutes.

Car rental firms are located on Level 0 at Terminal 1, right next to the P2 parking lot, Terminal 5 has its own Car Rental Centre (Mietwagencenter), located in the 'L' area of T5. It's close to the parking lot, where rental cars are picked up and later dropped off, too (P54). At present, car rental companies at Berlin Brandenburg Willy Brandt Airport include Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz, Sixt and Terstappen, also known as Buchbinder. A few more are to follow in time: Alamo, Dollar, Global Rent A Car, Interrent and Thrifty among them.

At T1 motorists are permitted to park briefly to drop off or pick up passengers; at T5 they must use one of 20 designated short-term parking spaces.

Terminal 5 links from the A113 Autobahn at Junction 'Schönefeld Süd' or via B96a Bundesstraße to Berlin. B96a passes T5 directly. Taking A113 to central Berlin takes only 15 minutes. Terminals 1 and 2 are located at Melli-Beese-Ring 1, 12529 Schönefeld.
